Tata Steel at OTC Houston 2011
03 May 2011
Tata Steel in Europe have been selected to present a technical paper at the prestigious Offshore Technology Conference in Houston this week.
The paper is the result of a joint research programme with the University of Naples and is concerned with the critical equations used by pipeline design engineers to calculate the theoretical deepwater collapse performance of steel pipelines.
Tata Steel have an extensive track record in supplying thick walled welded linepipe packages to the global oil and gas industry and this work has required us to understand the factors involved in specifying the linepipe to be used for such projects. The technical development team have already been successful in demonstrating their ability to enhance deepwater collapse resistance however during this work it became evident that the current equations used by engineers within the established industry standards are not accurate for all pipe sizes and do not describe the actual mechanisms of collapse.
The new study has resulted in new equations being developed which can overcome these shortcomings and could result in the standards being modified in the future. The equation also allows a better understanding of the effect pipe shape has on collapse - a key strength of the Tata Steel pipe mill in Hartlepool, UK.
In addition to presenting a technical paper, Tata Steel will also be exhibiting at the Offshore Technology Conference (OTC). This is the world's foremost event for the development of offshore resources in the fields of drilling, exploration, production and environmental protection and is held annually at Reliant Park in Houston. Last year the event attracted over 68,000 people.
For the first time the stand will also include Tata Steel's speciality engineering steel products used for drilling tools together with the pipeline packages and offshore structural steels traditionally featured at this event.
"This will be the first time that we have promoted ourselves as a specialised, single market focussed organisation for the Energy and Power sector," explains Russell Codling, Marketing Manager. "As the sector team becomes more established this will become the norm as we demonstrate to our potential customers the expertise and breadth of product capability throughout the whole of Tata Steel."
